The 15th Annual General Meeting of the Burgher Association

The 15th Annual General Meeting of the Burgher Association was held on Friday 24th March 2017 at the Dutch Burgher Union Hall, Reid Avenue, Colombo 05.

The following newly elected Office Bearers and Executive Committee were sworn in and assumed duties in the Association under the leadership of the newly elected President Mr. Carlyle De Zilva.

BURGHER ASSOCIATION CRICKET SIXES 2016

The annual softball Cricket Sixes Tournament of the Burgher Association sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka was successfully held on Sunday 7th August 2016 at the Malay Sports Club Ground, Colombo 02. 11 teams from Colombo and the suburbs as well as from Trincomalee contested under the Men’s under 40 and Men’s over 40 categories. All matches were officiated by a panel of neutral umpires and scorers from the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers Sri Lanka. 

The BA thanks the  Principal Sponsor  of the event ; SINGER Pvt Ltd and Mr Russel De La Motte Director Singer for his initiative  in this regard.
We also thank our Chief Guests Mr and Mrs Leon Daniels for their kind presence and  for  the  gift of cash to the BA.

The Ondray Ephraums Memorial Challenge Trophy was presented to the Trincomalee A team which emerged as the champions in the under 40 category while the Godwin Joseph Ludowyke Memorial Challenge Trophy  was presented to the Red Heads team as they emerged as the Champion team of the Men’s Over 40 competition. Special awards were also be presented to the Best Batsman and Best Bowler in each category.

BA Member's Tombola Nite

BA Member's Tombola Nite was held in May 2016 with the participation of an appreciable number of members and guests. Several games of tombola was held between sessions of music and dancing. Members enjoyed the evening and appreciated the fellowship, music and food. Our next event would be the BA Cricket Sixes Tournament to be held on Sunday 7th August 2016 ayt the Malay Grounds, Colombo 02.

THE BURGHER ASSOCIATION CHARITY PROJECT IN TRINCOMALEE ON 23rd APRIL 2016

The BA conducted a one off Charity project for 17 Widows of the  Burgher community . Almost all of the recipients are over 65  years of age. Many nutrients were donated among other consumer items. The BA also presented sports items to the Trincomalee soft ball  Burgher CRICKET team. An elderly gentleman in clutches and his wife were also presented 2 hampers. In all, eight Members of the BA -which included 5 from Ex Co too participated at this charity project which was worked out successfully. The items included in each of the 19 hampers were Rice, Milo, Nestomalt, Milk Powder, Viva, Toothpaste, Soap, Soya, Kotthamalli, Noodles and Tea leaves .

BURGHER ASSOCIATION LENTEN PILGRIMAGE
TO MAGGONA CALVARY

The annual Lenten Pilgrimage to Maggona Calvary organized by the Burgher Association was held on 22nd March (Poya Day). A luxury coach made available by Mr. Emil Kronemberg of ECD Global (Lvt) Ltd. took us to Maggona. The Way of the Cross was conducted byv.Fr Marius O.M.I. and was followed by Holy Mass. Our sincere thanks to Dawn De Kretser, Secretary and Emil. Here are some of the pictures of this event.

Presentation of the Book  "LISBON TO COLOMBO"  written by   Mr Sujeewa Nugawila

Mr. Sujeewa Nugawila; the Author of the book 'Lisbon to Colombo' visited the EX CO members of the Burgher Association recently at the Dutch Burgher Union conference hall  and explained in detail the salient points of his  new book , which he wrote recently. The book  is of immense  interest to the Burghers of Sri Lanka .  Picture  shows the presentation of the book  'Lisbon To Colombo'  by Author Sujeewa Nugawila  to the President and Vice President  of the Burgher Association ; Lt. Col. (Retd) Shane Balthazaar and Mrs Shirlene Chiba  respectively. The book is a compilation of a glossory of Sinhala words which have originated from Portugues words.

14th Annual General Meeting
The 14th Annual General Meeting was held on Friday 11th December at the Dutch Burgher Union, Hall, Colombo 4.Retired Lt. Col. Shane Balthazaar was unanimously elected as President of the Burgher Association. Lt. Col. Balthazaar is an old boy of St. Anthony’s College Kandy and served in the Sri Lanka Army for 22 years.  The following members were duly elected as office bearers of the Association for the year 2015/2016.   Office Bearers President: Lt.
